PURPOSE: The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Memorial Square has been created to honour students who passed away while attending, recently leaving or graduating from our school. May this garden's peace and beauty be a quiet daily haven for our school community to reflect and remember those who were loved. We hope it will serve as a daily reminder for all of us to nurture and take care of ourselves and our loved ones.

LOCATION: The Memorial Square is located on the South side of the school property alongside the Cafetorium patio. This location has the most scenic view of the school grounds and the Chris Garrett Memorial Park.

DESIGN: The Memorial Square is 36' x 22'. In the centre of the square is a 9' wide, 2 ½' tall circular retaining wall capped off with stone slabs for extra seating. A large flowering crab apple tree was planted in the centre in honour of those students. Each student has been commemorated with a personalized memorial stone placed directly below the tree. Four smaller beds are located in the corners of the square each holding a Pyramidal Dwarf Spruce tree. The grey and red pavers like those installed on the Cafetorium patio have been used as the main interlocking paver within the square.

COST: The total cost of the project was $6500.00.

BLESSING: The school held a dedication ceremony on June 11, 2003 to bless the Memorial Square. This ceremony involved the school community, family and friends of the students it was dedicated to. White doves were released into the sky by a family member of the students.

FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGNS:
1. Pennies from Heaven Collection Week:
Student Council and the Interac Club raised $1750.00 towards the Memorial by collecting pennies and spare change throughout a week long collection.

2. Community Donations:
Staff, students, parents, guardians, friends, and community members contributed towards the required items. All donations will be recognized on a tribute plaque displayed within the school.

3. Beach Volleyball Tournament:
A Beach Volleyball tournament held at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School on Monday, May 12, 2003 brought in $550.00 towards the Memorial.
